Due to time restrictions all drawings were in rough schematic form, but the intent had to be made clear.

No doubt the test criteria have since been upgraded and refined, as this was still in the early years of the state licensure process. In any case, I needn’t have worried so much, as I would learn from Ray later that I had scored second-highest in the entire state of California for that year. The person scoring the highest had a degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and would later become a partner in an internationally recognized firm with which I would also become associated.

As time went on, the daily commute from Pasadena to Beverly Hills began to take its toll on me, not just the physical aspects, which were bad enough, but the inherent waste and inefficiency of time and energy it represented. We tried a four-day week of ten hours a day, which seemed to work slightly better on paper, but not so well in practice as long as the rest of the world was on an eight-hour workday schedule. I was there sometimes when I was not needed and not there when, sure enough, a crisis would arise. Another option, of course, would have been to move closer to work, but I didn’t feel the necessary stability of the situation to justify disrupting the whole family for my own convenience.

Ray had long sensed my unrest and offered a raise to help compensate for the imbalance, but I assured him that that was not the issue. It was the waste and inefficiency about which I felt guilty, while at the same time crusading about it being at the root of many of our social ills. This, I felt, was basic to a landscape architect’s responsibility to society, so we in particular were obliged not to allow waste and inefficiency to occur in our personal lives.

As if in answer to a prayer, I heard through the grapevine that a highly reputable office in South Pasadena was seeking replacements for two of their top designers who were resigning to start their own practice. The chief partner of this office was none other than the internationally acclaimed landscape architect Garrett Eckbo, ⁷⁸ who authored a few books on the subject, one of which was the primary textbook at Cal Poly. I had admired him not only for his expertise as an environmental designer, but also as a humanitarian. I had to meet the man, whether I had the qualifications for the job or not. And it would certainly be conveniently close to home if I did succeed in getting a job there. I immediately made an appointment for an interview.
